A 75’ DOCUMENTARY
Until now, road traffic, fossil fuel and industry have been blamed for global warming and most often the influence of intensive agriculture used for the raising of livestock and other animals has been "passed over".
However, 18% of greenhouse gases are emitted by livestock and animal farming which is more than air and road transport combined.
Today, demographic trends and increased wealth are creating more demand for meat in the world. In 2000, 229 million tonnes of meat were comsumed and this is expected to rise to 465 million tonnes in 2050. India and China are two of the countries showing huge growth in demand..... Even if it were possible to satisfy this increased demand from around 6 to 8 billion people, which it is not, the impact on our environment would be catastrophic.
Most people are unaware of this and all the economic, ethical and ecological issues that this involves.
Therefore it is imperative that as many people as possible are informed and understand the issues in order to achieve a change of mind-set and behaviour. This is the goal of our film.
• WHY « Lovemeatender » ? The industrial scale of meat production is the origin of many disastrous influences on our environment. Even though the main meat consumers are in the industrialsed world, it is not in the United States or Europe where we will see the biggest rise in meat consumption but in developing countries like India and China. Even if it were possible to satisfy this increased demand from around 6 - 8 billion people, which it is not, the impact on our environment would be catastrophic. Most people are unaware of this and all the economic, ethical and ecological issues that this involves. So it is imperative that as many people as possible are informed and understand the issues in order to achieve a change of mind-set and behaviour• How ? We are proposing to make a film, aimed at the wider public, and especially at the young, which will give all the facts and facilitate reflection on the way in which these production methods, on an industrial scale, affect man, animals, and the environment.
After an opening scene (…), we will present various themes for reflection via interviews with well-known personalities who will present and show the impact on or in
- our society - the economy - health - climate change - the destruction of our natural environment (deforestation and desertification) - the loss of our biodiversity - water consumption - transport - ethics and animal well-being of the animals - ethics and the right to sufficient food and water
The film will be original because
- of its content, its global approach to and multi-disciplinary analysis of the brutal facts surrounding these problems
- of its presentation, rhythm and its use of different audio-visual presentation techniques and graphics which will capture and maintain the attention of the audience.
• WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES ? - To put the production and consumption of meat, both historically and culturally into perspective. To underline the differences between farming and industrial meat production
- To engage with as many people as possible, and especially the young, so that everyone can understand the impact of meat production on humans, the environment, and animals
- To develop collective resonsibility to ensure respectful and sustainable methods of production (Get our society to fundamentally re-think its attitude towards the meat industry)
- To develop individual responsability and to encourage responsible choices concerning the consumption and distribution of meat
- In sum, the film tries to answer the questions posed by a young girl:
- « If the animal suffers, if the planet suffers and if humans suffer, where is the pleasure on my plate ? »
- « Why is it that these things have not been discussed before ? »
- « What are the alternatives to the current industrial system ?
